DVDC helped bring Dino Quest to life by thoughtfully placing a dramatic animatronic T. rex within the existing site, carefully considering sightlines, spatial relationships, and technical needs to create a seamless and engaging focal point. Close coordination with specialty consultants ensured the exhibit was fully integrated, both visually and functionally, into the surrounding environment.
The team then shaped an immersive, prehistoric-inspired landscape that enhances the sense of discovery as visitors encounter the lifelike dinosaur in motion. Through layered planting, durable materials, and strategic shading, the design not only elevates the guest experience but also protects and supports the exhibit’s long-term performance.

As part of the Dino Quest revitalization at Discovery Cube Orange County, DVDC played a key role in the integration of a dynamic Animatronics Tyrannosaurus rex exhibit, designed to serve as a signature focal point within the reimagined environment. Working thoughtfully within the constraints of the existing site infrastructure, the design team carefully evaluated spatial relationships, sightlines, and technical requirements to identify an optimal location that would support both the operational needs of the animatronic system and the overall guest experience. Close coordination with specialty consultants and exhibit fabricators ensured that all structural, electrical, and mechanical considerations were seamlessly integrated into the landscape framework.
Once the placement of the animatronic element was established, DVDC developed a comprehensive landscape design strategy to enhance the immersive quality of the exhibit. The surrounding environment was carefully composed to create a sense of arrival and discovery, framing the guest experience as visitors enter the Dino Quest space and encounter the lifelike dinosaur in motion. Layered planting design and textural ground treatments were utilized to evoke a prehistoric atmosphere while maintaining durability and accessibility for high visitor traffic.
In addition to the experiential goals, long-term performance and preservation of the animatronic feature were central to the design approach. Strategic incorporation of shade was achieved through a combination of carefully selected plant species and deliberate placement which helps mitigate sun exposure and contributes to the longevity of the installation. This integration of environmental responsiveness with experiential design reflects DVDC’s commitment to creating spaces that are not only visually compelling, but also technically resilient and sustainably conceived.
